tires, unfortunately there is some sort of a sealant between the inner and outer lip to prevent leakage at the flanges. If you break the lips apart to change the tire, you wont be able to seal it back up when putting a new tire on it. The tire has to be replaced in a conventional manner, but nice thinking - I considered it too. :)
